Artificial intelligence becomes standard in Norwegian boardrooms

A new report from IBM reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming a fixed part of Norwegian and international boardrooms. Most large companies have now hired or are planning to hire a Chief AI Officer (CAIO) - a leader responsible for AI strategy at the top level.

From experiment to core competence

"AI is no longer an experimental tool. It has become a central part of business strategy," says analysis lead Maria Hansen at IBM Norway.

The report shows that:

  • 78% of large Norwegian companies now have a dedicated AI officer in management
  • AI strategy has become a fixed agenda item in 85% of board meetings
  • Over 60% of Norwegian CIOs expect AI to replace at least 30% of manual decision-making processes by 2027

Norwegian companies at the forefront

Norwegian companies are proving to be among the most progressive in Europe when it comes to integrating AI into the governance structure. Particularly within:

  • The energy sector: Equinor and Statnett use AI for decision support in critical infrastructure management
  • Finance: DNB and Nordea have implemented AI-driven risk management systems
  • Healthcare: OUS and Helse Sør-Øst are testing AI for resource allocation and patient flows

What does this mean for working life?

Professor Lars Erik Møller at NHH believes the changes are profound:

"We are seeing not just a technological revolution, but an organisational transformation. AI is no longer an IT project - it is a leadership challenge."

He points to three main trends:

  1. AI literacy becomes essential - All leaders must understand AI
  2. Decision-making processes change - AI supports, rather than replaces, human decisions
  3. Ethics and responsibility - New requirements for AI governance and transparency

Challenges

Despite the optimism, there are significant challenges:

  • Skills shortage - Too few qualified AI experts in Norway
  • Regulation - The EU's AI Act creates uncertainty for Norwegian companies
  • Data security - How to protect sensitive business information in AI systems

The future

According to the report, we will see the following developments over the next 2-3 years:

  • The CAIO role becomes as common as CFO and CTO
  • AI governance becomes its own discipline in MBA programmes
  • Norwegian companies could become leaders in "human-centered AI" - AI that supports, rather than replaces, human expertise

Conclusion

AI is no longer "if" - it is "when" and "how". For Norwegian board members and leaders, the question is not whether they should adopt AI, but how they can do so in a responsible and effective way.
